크리스 디버그(Chris DeBurgh)의 음악은 가을이다.

포크를 대주주로 팝과 아트록을 차분하게 담아 낸 오선지 위의 멜로디와 여성들의 모성본능을 자극하는 가녀린 음색과 바이브레이션은 깃을 올린 트렌치코트를 입고 붉은 낙엽으로 채색된 길을 홀로 걷는 외로운 남성의 뒷모습이다. 그런데 아이러니컬하게도 우리나라에서 크리스 디버그의 노래를 가장 자주 들을 수 있는 시기는 봄, 그것도 4월이다. 1979년에 발표한 ‘The girl with April in her eyes’라는 노래 때문인데 ‘4월의 눈동자를 가진 소녀’라는 아름다운 동화책 같은 타이틀만으로도 국내에서는 지금까지 꾸준히 애청되는 ‘에어프릴 송’이다. 어느덧 크리스 디버그의 ‘The girl with April in her eyes’는 사이먼 & 가펑클(Simon & Garfunkel)의 ‘April come she will’, 딥 퍼플(Deep Purple)의 ‘April’과 함께 4월을 정의하는 동급최강의 노래가 되었다.

크리스 디버그는 1948년 10월 15일, 탱고의 본고장인 아르헨티나의 부에노스아이레스에서 크리스토퍼 존 데이비드슨(Christopher John Davidson)이란 긴 이름으로 태어났다. 아일랜드 핏줄을 가진 영국인 부모 사이에서 출생했지만 아버지와 어머니가 이혼하는 바람에 자신의 이름을 어머니의 처녀 때 성이었던 디버그(DeBurgh)로 바꿨다.
1974년에 A&M 레코드와 계약한 크리스 디버그는 그해에 프로그레시브 록 밴드 슈퍼트램프(Supertramp)의 오프닝 무대에 서면서 팬 베이스 층이 형성됐고 1975년에 데뷔앨범 < Far Beyond These Castle Walls >를 공개해 본격적인 캐리어를 쌓기 시작했다.
1979년에 공개한 네 번째 앨범 < Crusader >에서 ‘The girl with April in her eyes’가 당시 국내 다운타운 가에서 큰 호응을 얻으며 크리스 디버그의 이름이 본격적으로 알려졌지만 유럽과 아시아 그리고 남미에서의 반응과는 달리 미국에서는 인지도가 상승하지 않았다.

1983년에 ‘Don’t pay the ferryman’이 전미 차트 34위에 오르면서 이름을 알린 크리스 디버그는 1987년에 자신의 가장 큰 히트곡인 ‘Lady in red’로 전미 차트 3위를 기록해 드디어 ‘그린카드’를 거머쥐었다(영국에선 1위).
이후 해외 인기 차트에 오른 그의 노래는 없지만 1990년대 초반에 발표한 ‘Here is your paradise’와 지난 2005년에 본인이 설립한 페리만 레이블을 통해 발표한 17번째 앨범 < Road To Freedom >에서 요절한 여가수 에바 캐시디(Eva Cassidy)에게 바치는 ‘Songbird’는 우리나라에서 잔잔한 반응을 얻었다.

Chris De Burgh의 초창기 음악에는 호소력 짙은 매우 독특한 보이스 컬러와 잔잔한 감동을 주는 고품격의 사운드를 담고 있다.

서사적이고 웅장한 첫곡 ''Spanish Train'', 다정한 분위기로 아름다운 사랑을 전하는 ''This Song for You''가 좋다.

추천곡은 크리스마스 시즌에 많이 들려오는 ''Spaceman Came Travelling''이다. 하늘에서 내려온 외계인이 인류에게 사랑과 온정 그리고 평화의 메시지를 전한다는 종교적인 내용이 담겨있다.

두개의 명반 사이에 끼어서 빛을 보지 못한 작품이지만 가슴을 휘감는 애절한 곡 ''Rainy Night in Paris''이 여기에 있다.

잔잔한 피아노 전주로 시작되어 살며시 들려오는 색소폰.....비오는 날 야경을 보며 듣느다면 이보다 좋은곡은 없다.

'' If You Really Love Her, Let Her Go''도 좋다.
